In 1998 I coached a small group of triathlete swimmers in Bath, England and discovered the thing that gives me the most joy in life... helping others to achieve their best.
I'd never claim to be the most talented athlete. Whilst pretty good, my genetic make-up isn't up with the elites - my VO2 Max is only 65ml/Kg. But I think that's what separates me from many other coaches in endurance sports, many of whom have been elite athletes...
I know what it's like to have to work hard in order to get a result. I've been the guy who swam 32:30 for 1500m, no matter how much I trained or how hard I tried. I know the frustration of outworking someone in training, only to have them breeze by me in a race as though I were window-shopping! More than that, I know what it's like to have to fit training around a real job, because I've never had the luxury of training and racing full-time.
As a result, I've spent countless hours researching what works, reading everything I could find and turning stuff that's written to be outrageously complicated into something everyone can understand. What's more, I've made many of the mistakes so that you don't have to make them yourself.
The result is that I believe that every athlete has far more potential than they show and that everyone can improve vastly on where they are now. And I will work with you at the level of commitment you are willing to make in order to get your best possible performance in your chosen sport.
Every athlete is different. And while we share our human physiology, our responses to training vary in so many ways. The art of coaching is to be able to look past someone's supposed limits and to find what it is that will cause them to improve. I've learned through countless hours of work with my clients, that science can only tell us so much. Success depends on treating every individual athlete as just that... an individual.
